Benefits and Outcomes

The fundamental goal of this project is to improve the health and livelihood of communities living in the Khua and Sampham regions. The project will achieve its goal by implementing activities in three main areas:

      • > Water and Sanitation
      • > Health and Nutrition
      • > Argo-Enterprise

 Water and Sanitation

Water supply, sanitation and/or irrigation systems will be installed in five villages. This will help to reduce water borne diseases, and particularly improve the lives of women and children who have the daily responsibility of collecting water from streams and rivers. CARE will also conduct sanitation and hygiene training for parents and children, educating them on the importance of hand washing, boiling water, cleaning food and utensils before use, and garbage collection and disposal.

 Health and Nutrition
Villages are very remote, and usually people must walk for many hours to the nearest health centre. Often the combined cost of transport and/or treatment means that people tend not to seek medical advice. To help counter this trend, village health workers will be provided with a basic store of medicines and equipment and will be trained to manage and administer these supplies. The small amount charged for administering the medicine will help replenish stores so that the program can be sustained. In addition, a de-worming campaign will also be conducted, which will be aimed at children and will increase the impact of nutritional awareness campaigns that CARE is currently conducting.

 Argo-Enterprise

The project will work with communities and traders to identify locally available products that have the potential to generate income i.e. honey. The project will incorporate an educational element to ensure the protection of natural resources. Communities will receive training on processing and marketing their produce to improve their ability to negotiate deals with traders. Some households will be selected and provided with basic equipment to process raw materials into end-products, enabling them to achieve higher rates of return on trade. Locally available materials will be used where possible to improve the potential for other households to replicate the activities.

Beneficiaries

CARE Australia is working in Phongsaly Province, providing clean drinking water, sanitation, and irrigation to more than 50,000 people in 31 villages. The Computershare Change a Life Foundation directly supports five of these villages.
